Paper held at SAG Conference 2011 By S. Gaulocher (ABB), Stadler (ABB), Th. von Hoff (ABB), R. Veldsman (ABB), A. Fuerst (ABB) and J. Koponen (ABB): Gearless mill drives (GMDs) are the workhorse in the mineral processing industries, more specifically when it comes to grinding crushed ore and cement (in various production stages) in semiautogenous (SAG) mills and large ball mills.
The grinding process with one 34' x 20' SAG mill and two 24' x ' ball mills will be briefly discussed. All three mills are gear driven by a ring gear, dual pinion and two low speed synchronous motors. Copper Mountain has installed on all three mills, the new stateofthe art dual pinion mill drives.
ABB is buying Alstom's ring motor business to enhance its gearless mill drive (GMD) activities. The business, based in Bilbao, Spain, has about 120 employees and achieved a turnover of €57m in 2012/13. It will become part of ABB's Process Automation division. The financial details of the deal have not been revealed.
